Post by KrystaBel Fri Feb 05, 2010 8:06 am

These two vid clips off Utube are really AWSUM.. Stan saying a few words to the Whanau at Tamapahore Marae, and then he sings "Born Of Greatness" (He Kakano..), with his immediate family. This is Maori protocol when speaking on a Marae, u always end ur speech with a waiata/song (It is the icing on the cake.."the cake is ur speech..the song is ur icing" so to speak!!)lolz... Here are the links...enjoy!!

Hey Krysta, thanks for the links! (I embedded them for you)

Love the song the whole family sings. It's great to hear Stan singing in Maori. I don't understand the language but I think the song talks about "Born of Greatness" of Maori people and culture. You can perceive the importance of this tradition, always affascinating for me.

The big guy with the blue T-shirt is Russ, Stan's older brother. Mikey is the eldest child.

How awesome to see Stan in the context of his culture and his home Marae.
The song they sing is the one shown on Idol in the video packages about him and his family.
What a lovely humility he has in that he wants his "Idol" win to be for his whanau and not just for him.

Aaaah gosh. I watched this tens of times. Every replay I appreciate it more. It is truly a gorgeous moment. I feel blessed to be able to see this footage actually. Gotta thank MaoriGurl771 for u/l and sharing this videos with everyone else.

Stan's voice is amazing! Stan At Tamapahore Marae 790600

I also wonder why Russ doesn't do more with Stan, Linda. isn't he great? may be a singing career is not in his plans I guess? Mikey obviously is in the mind set of a musical career but we haven't heard him doing a solo yet. I know he can sing well.... would love to hear something from him.

These are the words to this beautiful song.(waiata) sunny

    He Kakono Ahau

    He Kakano ahau,
    i ruia mai i Rangiatea

And I could never be lost
    I am a seed
    Born of Greatness
Descended from a line of chiefs

    He Kakano ahau
Ki hea ra au e hitekiteki
ana ka mau tonu i ahau
    oku tikanga
    Toku reo, toku oho oho
    Toku Reo
    Toku mapihi maurea
    Toku whakakai marihi

    My language is my strength
    An ornament of grace

    Ka tu ana ahau
    ka uhia au e
    oku tipuna

    My pride I will show
    That you may know
    Who I am!
    I am a warrior, a survivor

    He morehu ahau
Ki hea ra au e hitekiteki
ana ka mau tonu i ahau
    oku tikanga
    Toku re, toku oho oho
    Toku reo
    Toku mapihi maurea
    Toku whakakai marihi

    My language is my strength
    An ornament of Grace
    An ornament of Grace

Kia mau ki to Maoritanga (Hold fast to your culture)

    Composer Hohepa Tamehana

Had to share the words of this totally awesum song to give a better understanding of its meaning.

For myself....find this song very spiritual, uplifting....feel the joy, honour, strength, grace of such a proud culture. wub Stan At Tamapahore Marae 52856

Such powerful lyrics, moved me so deeply. I am in awe atm. I've always been affascinated with Maori culture since I was a little girl. Now, since moving to OZ, knowing Stan and all you beatiful Maori people I would love to learn more about it. Thank you again to all for sharing your culture and traditions on this forum. I feel honored.
