Just announced: Stan Walker to perform on Waitangi Day

The star power is being notched up another level for Manukau’s Waitangi Day Family Celebrations with the addition of Australian Idol 2009, Stan Walker, to the line-up.
Walker became the first New Zealander to win the Australian talent show in 2009, winning the audience and voters over with his soulful and captivating vocals. Songs he sang during the competition include Prince’s Purple Rain, Beyoncé’s Single Ladies and the classic hymn Amazing Grace.
His debut single, Black Box, has become a New Zealand radio hit, reaching number one in the radio charts in December and earning platinum status. His album, Introducing… Stan Walker, peaked at number two in the New Zealand charts.
Nigel Borell, Toi o Manukau Kaiwhakahaere, is excited to announce the performance. “Stan Walker is an amazing performer who is proud of his Aotearoa roots. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for Manukau”.
Walker joins an already impressive line-up of live music scheduled for the event, with artists including Kora, Maisey Rika, J Williams and Erakah, also set to hit the stage.
Live music is just one aspect of a great day of fun for the whole community at Manukau’s Waitangi Day celebrations. Toi o Manukau have organised a great day of ceremony, education, market stalls, free entertainment and children's rides to commemorate Waitangi Day.

Post by kiwianabananarama Mon Feb 08, 2010 5:57 am

Hey friends of SS its been a busy little weekend for me but a very memorable one! I've decided to write about Waitangi Day first because I guess its the most recent! Again sorry I have kept you guys waiting but you have no idea the hours it takes to upload so many videos and for me, family comes first so I kinda have to work around them. SOOOO...for those who dont wanna read an essay stop reading now Sarah..lols...jokes cuz!!

We arrived back in Auckland at 8:15 in the morning. I had no family ...haha...theyd gone to the beach...awesome! coz we love the beach but awww!! they had forgetten about Stan in Manukau. Anyway after showering and changing I uploaded my first video of Taupo...so proud and excited to see it. Stans bootilicious aint he? dancing with Miss Ashley but the sound quality was bad and that made me stop uploading...Ok I was dissappointed. Then I saw the bruises on my leg and I remembered what I went thru to get those videos. Anyway I had another chance to get some primo vids for my SSFF and I was prepared to do anything to get them...haha. Honestly tho I was kinda a bit apprehensive coz those teens in Taupo...omg...they are pretty strong...and I didnt think I could hold off some big Maori & Poly teens from South Auckland if they decided to be pyscho~maniacs too. We, that is my mate and my 17yr old son(big maori boy) haha...jumped in the car and off we went to find flatbush Manukau...never been there before and we were running kinda late...it was 10am already and I knew the gates were open for the Waitangi Day Celebrations. We travelled bout 35 mins and when I saw the crowd I was like ...oh no! ...my heart sank...I thought it was gonna be a miracle if I was ever going to be mid front of stage for my lovely idol. I was outta the car and headed for the stage passing lots of kiddie rides and food stalls...oooh shiny....haha...just a Hikoi joke there...it was an awesome set up and i felt fantastic to be among my whanau...haha....we maoris are all family you know...haha...oooh I almost got sidetracked coz this little boy had a half watermelon packed with ice cream and he could barely carry it(I'll carry that for you little boy~ nah i didnt say that..haha)...looked so yummy, I realised I hadnt eaten...oh well I had pressing matters to take care of...haha...The stage was way off to the right...I passed the Mai FM tent where i knew Stan would be signing at straight after the concert and neared the stage. I was kinda shocked to see that the barriers were some ways back from the stage. I stopped to take that all in...I hadnt figured on that...and there were families...tons of them sprawled everywhere with their chilly bins and lots of kiddies and blankets....aaawww....all the whanau had come to see STAN...CHOICE!! ahahaha...I took a breath and stepped thru all the families weaving my way thru the seated hordes...oh did i mention Id left mate and son behind...haha...they were only a txt away...haha..I saw two little boys right in the middle front of the barrier lying like starfish on the grass...they were claiming that piece of land...haha...naa they were!... for their family! I sat by them...they sat up and looked at me like 'get lost' ...then their Mum arrived ...shes a big beautiful maori woman...she looked kinda ticked to see me too...but I wasnt about to fight her...heck no...coz i would lose...ahaha...no i would...so they got the front and i was just behind them. Everyone seemed pretty happy in every direction I looked. I get this txt from Superman hes going to the 7s again...so then Im txting and laughing. Aww me mates in front of me...they were eating lunch...and I just started to talk to the Mum about her beautiful children(always the right topic of conversation with any mum). Then she invited me to sit on their mat!! YES!!! I was so happy!! When son and mate arrived (coz I txtd them) they looked half amused at where I was...but yea we were all stoked!!...and son bought me a humungous mussel fritter...which I shared with the whanau!! I actually wasnt that hungry...just couldnt wait to see Stan again! It was 11 am someone was talking on the mic and a group sung a maori song I knew so i sung it too...haha...I was watching the maori flags blowing in the wind and txting Superman and chatting to Mrs BBB 'big black beautiful'one...haha...she was really nice and they lived very close to the venue. I was sizing up the barrier too. Compared to Taupo it was pretty thin, like plastic lego, too easy to push over when the teens couldnt control their desires for some STAN THE MAN...I was starting to worry that all these children might get really hurt too. I had already witnessed that in Taupo....bad memories...haha...naaaaa I was just concerned thats all. The time flew by and then blow me down Ash, Taya and Tamilee came out...what! I pulled out the camera and mentioned to Mrs BBB that the teens would smash thru the barrier and over her mat. She laughed and said there was no way shed let that happen. She was the man! but then she hadnt experienced the 'Stan Effect' and the way teens behave when they see him...OMG I was so excited to see him again in less than 24 hrs...so awesome to be at the front with my new whanau...haha...then he just came out...the teens went wild screaming and jumped to their feet and moved forward...Mrs BBB jumped up too and turned around folding her arms like a bouncer/sumo...ahahaha...omg the teens stopped...and moved around us...to the front but around her mat...I was stunned...they were calling out to Stan but really well behaved and no one stepped on the mat and no one was pushing at the barrier! Except for a beautiful lady that Stan called his Nana...yes i took a photo of her!!!! of course!! Hi nana i said...she smiled and waved!! haha...Shes pretty...Stan comes from good stock!! His voice was again divine...and the huge speakers were blasting it my way ...it was great...course everyone was calling out to him ....but when he spoke...no one said a thing...totally different from Taupo...the sound check didnt last long...and Stan looked a lot happier...and hot ...plus he was HAWTTT!! Then Stan left the stage and the screams died down. Everyone sat down ....I am so impressed at this point with my Auckland whanau. The concert started with a maori culture group...they were great and I made a mental note to sign up with their group later coz they were looking for new members. Then a samoan group came out...OMG...all the woman went nuts again coz they were very very very handsome muscly guys...haha...ok they were hot..and oily...and tanned ....with tats...and only a lil 'something' around the middle...i dunno i wasnt paying attention to that...hahaha..dang they were awesome and they could dance!! I videoed of course...haha.

Then the host anounced Stan was coming and the crowd was buzzing...excited but well behaved...so i took a video coz I was just so impressed!! The BVs were on stage too. When Stan came out people were up again moving forward, screaming but no one dared step on the mat!! I had so much room...felt like a VIP with the perfect place to stand with my newly adopted whanau. Me and son and mate were having a great time!!!
I kept cracking up at Stan...he was really happy chatting away and waving to his whanau....and then Stan told a joke about the chicken that crossed the road...he was laughing so much on the punchline ~ no one heard it!...hahaha...but we all just laughed coz he was laughing...aww Stan...He goes... anyone come from Taupo? ...we threw up our hands and yelled Yep...he looked surprised...haha...Ash waved...Taya and Tam smiling...Stan pointed to us and motioned to my son pointing to his head...My son was wearing 'Lower' label brand clothing to Taupo ( a cap and Tee Shirt) and THATS what Stan remembered of us coz he was wearing the 'Lower' label too. Thats great ae? i make all this effort and Stan remembers the Lower cap!!! lmao....BOYS!
He introduced the band...see the vid alright..lol! The sound technicians were taking a while and Stan chatted away...hes so funny!

Then he started singing and I was melting from his amazing voice...like this was the first time Id ever heard him sing...I was holding the camera....videoing....dancing coz i had so much space and laughing...it was the best. He sang 4 songs...Put yr hand, Umbrella, Smash into you and BlackBox...hold on ...no he sung 5...and now Im writing this I just remembered he sung the ole skool classic...dang cant remember what its called but I must have the vid coz i videoed the lot...haha...dw i'll upload it!! Everyone was having the best time...BUT NOT ON MY MAT...hahaha...that was just us and my new whanau!! Stan didnt dance much...he was concentrating on his vocal performance and i appreciated that ..'alguds Stan I danced for both of us boi!' hahaha...
Smash into you has become my favourite LIVE performance of Stans coz he puts his heart into it when he sings it and I cant handle it ae...man hes just too much...he gives his soul and its surreal, sublime...haha its just frikken awesome...but I didnt cry ...I absorbed every second of his amazing voice...and thats what i love about him too is that he always adds a little bit extra to his performances...Luther Vandross used to do that...Stan was the best...true bliss for me!! He was amazing ...a total professional in every way...but funny too!!

It ended far too soon and people were already running to the MaiFM tent. The joy of being at the front for the concert ended as I realised I couldnt be at the front for the signing too. But i gave my new whanau the biggest hugs and kisses and thankyous ever! Man if they ever need me...i am so gonna be there for them!! Then i was running but made maybe no.100 in a line of 200. Stan was driven to the Mai FM tent and signed a few things for the fans and didnt stay long at all. Not even sure if those lucky fans got photos. Then he was gone....

It was an amazing event!! Perhaps there were 10,000 people from the south...probably more. We decided to head home coz we were wasted and as we left I looked back at all my Auckland Whanau...oh and bought a reggae wristband fynest...haha...South Auckland rocks for sure!!
I heard all the other acts...J Williams, Maisey Rika etc....were outstanding and the crowd were loving them...but my thoughts were only of my lovely idol ...Stan Walker~ the best idol in my opinion!! haha!

How Lovely! I lived every moment through you Kiwiana. Even down to the tears in my eyes. What is it about this special, young man that just makes me tear up, smile this stupid, gaga smile whenever I speak of him, listen or watch him? Crazy huh???! wub
