GRANT BRYANT IN QUEENSTOWN
A promising film duo shooting Kiwi-Australian star Stan Walker's latest music clip had all the stops pulled out by Wakatipu and Southland communities – and could be back for a feature film.
Director-and-producer combo Benn Jae and Sally Quade wrapped the shoot for Music Won't Break Your Heart on Sunday, and went from a tight, no-frills budget to having a helicopter, cameras, lighting gear and crew laid on by local suppliers.
As well as the sparkle added by the generosity of the film community, the duo and their crew were also provided with campervans, which they slept in, were able to shoot on the Kingston Flyer and Queenstown skifields, and had location fees waived by Wakatipu farmers.
Speaking to The Southland Times just before flying back to Sydney and repacking his bags for another shoot in Los Angeles, Jae said he could hardly believe the generosity shown.
"It was a really tight budget and a week out from shooting, me and the cinematographer Ross drove everywhere in Central Otago and Southland in a campervan trying to figure out how to get the most out of the money we had.
"Thanks to the incredible generosity of so many people, we ended up shooting in some amazing places, discovering some great talent and getting jaw-dropping footage for what will hopefully be an amazing clip."
Film Otago Southland chief executive Kevin Jennings said many doors had opened for the duo because they were being backed as "real up-and-comers," with the potential to return with bigger projects.
"Venture Southland, the Department of Conservation in Southland and Queenstown, The Helicopter Line, Queenstown film equipment supply legend Brett Mills, NZSki, David Bryce at the Kingston Flyer, Britz, the Glenorchy camping ground, and landowners at Diamond Lake and the Rees Valley all made this shoot something much bigger and much better than it was ever planned to be. Everyone involved is very grateful because it will show off our entire region to Australian film-makers who are our greatest potential growth market."
Ms Quade said the visit underlined the pair's hopes of shooting a feature film in the area.
"The real bonus has been working with local crews and people."

Stan Walker's latest music clip, Music Won't Break Your Heart, shot with Queenstown equipment and crews throughout Southland and the Wakatipu, will air in mid-March. Look out for teenage Southland dancers and skaters doing backflips and tricks at the Glengarry Mall, the Kingston Flyer, scenes shot on the Remarkables and Coronet Peak and Crinan St in south Invercargill, as well as the Rees Valley, Diamond Lake and helicopter shots on Hump Ridge. Flying Fish Sydney director Benn Jae and producer Sally Quade hope to be back in the region to shoot a feature film. A making-of clip will be released on YouTube once the video is released.
