P&O Cruises will hold a huge Pacific Island Family Christmas Festival on Auckland’s Queens Wharf on Tuesday December 21 to mark the launch of the first superliner to be based in New Zealand, Pacific Pearl.

The celebration will feature a spectacular fireworks display over Auckland harbour as well as performances by headline acts Dane Rumble and Stan Walker. The free entertainment will also include a large ferris wheel plus circus and street performers.

The 4 ½ hour family festival and naming ceremony will begin at 5pm, with a family cruise prize up for grabs among those who attend. The next day Pacific Pearl departs on her 8-night maiden voyage to New Caledonia.

Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises says “We’re very excited to be launching Pacific Pearl in New Zealand. The ship will make a major contribution to the local economy and we’re very keen to celebrate her debut by staging a large event for the people of Auckland.
“It will be a chance for everyone to see the ship and sample some of the entertainment and food that we offer, while having a great family night out.”

The celebrations will see triple Olympic medallist Barbara Kendall, godmother of Pacific Pearl, officially name the ship with the traditional breaking of a bottle of New Zealand bubbles over the ship’s bow.

The public will also get the chance to a sample the exceptional hospitality available onboard the ship with food stalls at the festival serving cuisine from Pacific Pearl’s restaurants and cafes, including Luke Mangan’s Salt Grill.

The menu samples will feature a strong New Zealand flavour, reflecting P&O Cruises’ commitment to sourcing from local food and wine suppliers. These New Zealand components will also be a highlight of two food and wine themed three-night cruises on Pacific Pearl in January and May 2011.

Pacific Pearl is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar refit in Singapore before heading to New Zealand, her arrival signifying P&O Cruises’ strong commitment to the New Zealand market and recognising New Zealanders’ increasing interest in cruise holidays.

Pacific Pearl’s many features will include a giant entertainment screen on her pool deck. Stretching seven metres wide and four metres high, the state-of-the-art LED “Big Screen” will create the opportunity for poolside fun day and night.

In a first for the cruise line, Pacific Pearl will give her passengers a new way to soak up the sun and relax while on holiday with a swim-up-bar in one of her two pools.

For a sneak preview of Pacific Pearl’s highlights prior to her launch, follow the ship’s blog at http://pacificpearl.pocruises.com.au

The arrival of superliner Pacific Pearl in New Zealand this December brings P&O Cruises’ Australasian fleet to four ships – Pacific Jewel, Pacific Dawn, Pacific Sun and Pacific Pearl. Pacific Sun, which previously sailed from Auckland, will now offer cruises from Sydney, Fremantle and Newcastle.

Carrying 1,800 passengers, the 63,500-tonne Pacific Pearl will feature a giant poolside entertainment screen, three restaurants including Waterfront, Plantation, and Salt Grill by Luke Mangan, seven bars and lounges, Aqua HealthSpaFitness centre, two swimming pools, a swim-up-bar, multi-level show lounge, four kids centres, a casino and duty-free shopping boutiques.

I never wrote about Seeing Stan at the wharf. Naughty girl Kiwiana! Well perhaps no one will get to read this as its 3 months old haha.

I went into the city to see Stan and the pacific pearl superliner cruise boat launch. It was a very warm afternoon and when we arrived there were about 100 people waiting so we mingled in. There were a couple of ferris wheels and a sand pit with a snowman lol...for the kids. There were food stalls and an area for the stage etc. I took a couple of photos and admired the superliner. For some reason I thought we were going to go on board and have a look around the cruise boat but no they didn't let us..so we decided we'd wait near the stage for the show to begin. Do you know we stood there for 4 and half hours to keep our place at the front of the stage...coz the place filled up so quickly and if you moved well you were never gonna be in the same place again. But the entertainment was good. There was an MC from the edge radio station, the funky monkeys(similar to the wiggles), a cook island group wearing coconut shells lol, some cirque performers from the pacific pearl, a DJ, a clown called cornflake, there were little competitions for little prizes and they had a main prize to win an 8 day cruise. Sadly I didn't win anything lolol.. BUT you know what...I was impressed that people kept calling out for Stan. He didn't come onstage till about 9.30pm...looking hot in his pink shirt and bowtie(from the carols nite)...and he sung to a backing CD. (see my vids above)He was amazing. I'm pretty happy with my videos this time. And happy to be front of stage. The whole crowd just enjoyed him so much. They kept yelling STAN WAL-KER! STAN WAL-KER!..aww it was great. I enjoy seeing peoples reactions and them just looking mesmorized when he sings. After Stan finished his 4 songs, Dane Rumble came out with his band and he was awesome too. I'm a fan of him now lol. Then Stan came back out and they sung 'Everything' by Dane Rumble. Stans funny az. He kinda copies Dane with his dancing and actions...then he goes back to his being himself..aw he makes me smile. Dane had the crowd jumping...and I had sore feet by the end of the night. Oh the launching of the superliner was good too but I couldn't actually see it properly. They had that on board the ship...and it was being shown on the side of the ship. Barbara Kendall did a great job.

It was a great night! I kinda wished tho that Stan had sung a christmas song...O holy night or Lil drummer boy...even if there was no backing CD...acapella would've been amazing...being 4 days out from Christmas..I probably would've had a cry lol.
But to see Stan before Christmas and to be there was a huge treat for me. sunny
