Townsville to host NQ Yasi Relief Concert

Townsville will host what's being dubbed the biggest disaster fundraising concert in the State with Jimmy Barnes the headline act, Premier Anna Bligh announced today.

"The Cyclone Yasi Relief Concert NQ is going to be an outdoor concert to remember with over eight hours of entertainment," Ms Bligh said.

"Joining Jimmy Barnes on the line-up are three of the most popular Australia Idol stars - Shannon Noll, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Stan Walker.

"ARIA Hall of Fame inductees Dragon, fronted by Marc Williams, will open the show.

"North Queensland local band, The Godfather's of Funk, will also be performing.

"My congratulations to the combined Rotary Clubs of North Queensland for organising what is shaping up as a great event," Ms Bligh said.

The concert will be held on April 9, 2011 at Tony Ireland Stadium, Townsville with gates opening at 2pm. Tickets will be on sale soon from the Ticketshop at the Townsville Civic Theatre and at Riverway. Ticket prices will be $75 for general admission through to Premium seats at $100.

"This is a great opportunity to further help those devastated by the recent flood and cyclone events and an opportunity for families to enjoy a day out," Ms Bligh said.

Member for Thuringowa Craig Wallace said Rotary was arranging special treatment for families affected by Cyclone Yasi.

"Through Rotary, affected families from areas such as Tully and Cardwell will be bussed to the event as guests, hopefully providing some emotional relief and a break for those who have lost so much.

"I'm appealing to Townsville and North Queensland to get behind this concert," he said.

District Governor of Rotary for North Qld, Alan Church said that apart from the practical help that Rotary has given to those affected by Cyclone Yasi, the concert will raise much needed funds to assist people in the north.

"Rotary has been on the ground giving aid and assistance in the clean up, but this concert will raise money to be spent rebuilding the lives and communities hardest hit by the cyclone" Mr Church said.

Member for Mundingburra Lindy Nelson-Carr said: "With a great line-up already locked in this concert could attract up to 10,000 people.

"The rest of Queensland will see we know how to put on a show in the North," she said.

Member for Townsville Mandy Johnstone said: "There has already been an overwhelming show of support from suppliers and production companies.

"A great turnout from the public could potentially raise more than $250,000," she said.
