    Fires and fireworks

AUSSIE Idol winner Stan Walker will fire up the Lifeway College's Sky Fawkes event on November 27.

It will be held at Snells Beach Reserve. Thousands usually flock to the Lifeway free family event which runs from 6pm until around 9pm. Food stalls, rides, games and live entertainment will conclude with a fireworks display after dark.

The Christmas carnival season in Rodney catches alight with fireworks on October 29 at Kumeu.

A Fire Service open day with fireworks will be held on the Orewa reserve on October 30. From then on it's a cavalcade of events through the Christmas build-up and into the New Year.

The Orewa event attracts thousands as the Fire Service shows off what it can do with displays of car fires, monsoon bucket filling, kitchen blazes and formal drills from 3pm. Then it's music and fireworks until 10pm.

"Our open days have become something of a calender event, and we are really grateful for the support of local businesses," volunteer support officer Ted Fuller says. "We hope these days will give the community a chance to see the other side of our firefighters, and perhaps interest them in joining their local brigade."

The Silverdale competition team will give a demonstration and members of the public will have an opportunity to squirt water hoses at a target.

The Coastguard will also give a water rescue display, Blue Skies Sky Diving will perform and a navy Seasprite helicopter will take part.

The annual Police v Fire Truck Pull will take place before the fire events.

The evening will progress to a picnic in the park atmosphere with a band and the fireworks display at 9pm. A $5 donation would be appreciated.

Senior fire fighter Natasha Thompson says the event is a very timely with Guy Fawkes approaching on November 5.

"We will have lots of information on how to be safe around fireworks. Hopefully having a public display will decrease the number of call-outs we get."

On the run-up to Guy Fawkes there is a list of events district-wide ready to entertain Rodney residents.Taupaki School and Shogun Fireworks hosts its 13th Monster Fireworks Display at the Kumeu Showgrounds on October 29. Gates open from 5pm.

Get a family pass from the school before the event for $25, which includes two adults and four children. Or get tickets at the gate for $30 per family, or $10 per adult and $5 for children and senior citizens. Fireworks start around 8.15pm.Tomarata School hosts its fireworks display in the Tomarata School Domain on November 6. Starting at 5.30pm, entry costs $10 per car or $5 per person. Bouncy castles, raffles, food stalls and a bonfire will warm up the crowd Halloween events include a party with band The Damage at the Warkworth Scout Hall on October 29 at 7.30pm to raise funds to the Mahurangi Kindergarten, and a Spooktacular at the Mahurangi Gym Club on October 30, 5pm to 8pm, for its fundraiser.
